At Inbound Mantra, I have been working on Facebook ads for hours and have discovered various targeting gems which can help you easily target your ideal persona.
In this blog, I will be sharing all my gems that I have discovered in Facebook targeting, till now. I will keep adding newer ideas, as and when I encounter them.
So here I begin.
1. Target by location
Location plays a great role in facebook ads targeting but did you know you can even target people based on their movement in that location. For eg. If I want to target people who have recently traveled to Mumbai then I only have to choose ( People recently in this location ).
Location part does not end here.
You can also target a specific area using drop pin tab ( as shown in the above image ) within 2-10 miles of a radius.
2. Target by Age and Gender
If you are looking to target the elderly then you can easily choose 65+ in age section and your ad will only be shown to people who are above 65. Facebook targeting age selector is very helpful in showing ads or selling products to people based on their age. Gender selector is also helpful in the same manner.
3. Targeting based on education level
This targeting is best for someone who is trying to target people based on their educational qualification. For example, if I am trying to target students in college I will simply choose an (in college) option.
You can also target people based on their school name they have entered in their profiles. All you need to do is just enter the name of that school in blank space as shown in above image and if school name appears you are lucky :). Both the above options are available under Detailed Targeting >> Demographics >> Education
4. Targeting Based on life events
Did you know you can target people based on their life events? For example, if you are looking to target people who recently got engaged then this is the right place to target them. Life events have much more options such as upcoming birthday, Recently moved to a new city etc. This option is available under Detailed Targeting >> Demographics >> Life events
5. Targeting Parents
This targeting is beneficial to those corporates who are either trying to attract kids or parents.
This targeting helps you target expectant parents to parents of adult children. Here you can easily target expectant parents if your products are for newborn. If you work for an educational institution offering courses to teenagers then you can simply target parents with teenagers. This targeting is a cash in opportunity. Just grab it if you are one of the corporates looking for this kind of targeting. This option is available under Detailed Targeting >> Demographics >> Parents >> All parents
6. Targeting based on Work
If you are looking to target professionals like CEO, CXO, MD etc. then you must use job title targeting option in Facebook ads. This targeting option allows you target people based on their job profiles and if you are looking to target people of a certain organisation then you can simply choose employers, type name of that company and your work is done. To use this option use this path Detailed Targeting >> Demographics >> Work
7. Targeting people based on their interest
Reach specific audiences by looking at their interests, activities, the Pages they have liked and closely related topics
As you can see in above image there are various options such as business industry, fitness and wellness and shopping & fashion etc. Use can use them in various targeting for example if I am trying to target people who like drinking tea then I will choose tea as a targeting option under food and drink tab.
This targeting is beneficial if you are trying to target people based on their interest.

8. Targeting based on consumer classification (India)
This targeting allows you to target that audience who have been predicted to prefer mid-high value goods.
So, if your company produces mid-high value products then this is a good opportunity for you as you will be able to target that audience who will prefer your goods.
9. Targeting based on Sports
Did you know you can target people based on their sports interest?
Yes, It is possible in Facebook.
Right now Facebook gives fewer options such as college football or cricket enthusiast. Here you can easily target your buyer persona if he or she usually engages with content related to cricket or college football.

10. Targeting a specific mobile brand
Yes, In Facebook targeting it is possible to target users of a specific mobile model.
As you can see above image it shows various mobile options. So, here if I choose Nexus 5 then my ad will only be shown to Nexus 5 users in my target audience.

11. Targeting Expats
Few months ago I was facing difficulty in targeting NRI ( Expats India ). Soon I discovered that Facebook ads targeting have the option to target NRI. It was like a dream come true :).
Facebook provides expat option for various countries. This will help you in targeting expats if you were finding difficulty in same or if you will be targeting expats in future. This option is available under Detailed Targeting >> Behaviour >> Expats
12. Targeting based on Travel
This targeting allows you to target people based on their travelling activities. For example, if you are in the airline business and you are finding a way to pitch international travelers than you can easily target them by choosing Frequent international travelers option in Facebook targeting.
You can also target people who are travelling for business by simply choosing Business travelers option. This option is available under Detailed Targeting >> Behaviour >> Travel
13. Targeting people based on Internet browser they use
As you can see in above image it shows various mobile browser options. Here you can target your buyer persona based on what type of Browser they use. For example, If you are looking to target people who use safari then just simply choose Primary Browser: Safari and you ad will be displayed to people who use Safari as their primary browser.
14. Targeting people who have liked your Facebook page
Usually, people forget that they have a ready-made audience as Facebook page likes. But did you know you can target them? Yes, This is possible. Simply choose People who like your page and your work is done. This option is available under Connections >> Facebook Pages >> People who like your page
