Students taking on corporate careers either full-time or for summer projects can make proactive use of the micro-blogging tool Twitter to begin orienting into their new roles.The MBA summer project is just a week away. Understandably, B-School students would have completely brushed up on the technical details in preparation for the project. But what about the Social aspect of the Summer Project and in particular the opportunity to orient into the organisation using social media, even before stepping into it? Have you given it a thought?In the next few blogs posts, I would describe how students and MBA students in particular can take advantage of social media and Web 2.0 tools in the run-up to their MBA Summer Projects. We begin with Twitter.
- Follow Key Employees of the Company - Start Following key employees of the company who are prolific on twitter. These could be junior management, senior management or even the top management. E.g. Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman of the Mahindra Group is prolific on twitter @anandmahindra . Few ways to search for Key Employees is the company website followed by search.twitter.com
- Engage with the Employees - Once you have started following prolific employees, you can also start engaging with them. You could do this by sharing that you have your summers at that company. Use this opportunity to request meetings with Key Management personnel, even before you have started off on the summer project. It is natural to be apprehensive about these steps, but the very nature of twitter makes all this possible. Your gestures to reach out would be mostly encouraged. So go ahead and take the chance. Just in case, you don't get any desired response, it will be mostly because of twitter inaction, rather than rejection. If the above works out, you will have a strong heads-up into the organisation even before you set foot in. This orientation is extremely valuable in the short two months to eight weeks MBA summer project. Usually, just settling in, takes up two weeks.
- Follow Company's Twitter Handle - To be informed of the general happenings in the Company
